Stan Wilson had been in charge all day, but he wasn’t sure how it had gone. Yes, he and Kent had gotten the DNA of Russ Wallace, an associate of their victim. But he had a feeling nothing would come of that. They had sent the sample to the BCA office in Bemidji despite Stan’s reticence. The rock salesman seemed like a nice enough fellow. A bit strange. But who was Stan to judge that fact?

Having sent Kent home to his family an hour ago, Paul had gone out to get the two of them a pizza. That couldn’t happen soon enough, Stan thought as his stomach growled. He needed to feed the beast.

When the door suddenly opened quickly to the main squad room, Stan glanced up thinking it was Paul with the pizza. Instead, it was one of the Carlson brothers—Danny or Donny. He always got them confused.

“That door should have been locked,” Stan said to the man in the waiting area.

The Carlson man shuffled his feet with his baseball cap in his hands being wringed like a Sunday chicken’s neck.

“Sorry to bother you, Hoss,” the man said. Then he hesitated and continued his assault on his hat.

Stan walked over to the barrier that divided their workspace from the public. “My name isn’t Hoss. You can call me Sergeant Wilson. What’s up?”

“Sorry,” the man said. “Do you remember me? I’m the one gonna testify against those people from last December.”

Yeah, now he remembered which one this was. However, both of the Carlson brothers had agreed to testify. This one was Donny, and he would be the county attorney’s main witness.

“What can I do for you Donny?” Stan asked.

“It’s my brother,” Donny said. “He’s trying to kill me again.”

“He’s killed you in the past?” Stan asked, trying not to smile.

“Well, not exactly. But he’s gonna do it eventually. He even says so.”

Stan had always heard not to play into the delusions of those a few fries short of a happy meal. But this time he couldn’t help himself.

“Okay,” Stan said. “Maybe you should make a formal complaint.”

“How would that work?” Donny asked.

Going into some detail, Stan explained the process to this man. He recalled now from a briefing by the Chief that Danny and Donny had an ongoing feud. Stan hated to get in the way of stupidity, but he also knew that sometimes these feuds could get out of hand.

“You’re saying I could send my brother to jail for simply communicating a threat?” Donny asked.

Stan wasn’t getting through to this guy. He let out a breath of air and said, “It’s more likely that a judge would issue a restraining order making sure your brother didn’t come within a certain distance of you and he could never contact you.”

“Not even for like a beer or something?” Donny asked with confusion.

“You’re saying you want to have a beer with your brother?” Stan asked. “The same brother who wants to kill you?”

Donny slapped his hat against his hand and then said, “Maybe I need to think about this.
